ACTIVITIES: Here are more details on activities: HORSE RIDING- For the horse riders, there are many riding schools dotted around the Periana area. For more details contact Rona. SKIING- If you are holidaying in the winter months don't forget to bring your skis! just 2 hours away from Periana, in the Sierra Nevada, is excellent skiing. GOLF- There are also many golf courses dotted around, the nearest one being just 20 minutes away. WATERSPORTS- Lake Viñuela is situated just about 10 minutes drive from Periana. Here you can take out a pedaloe or a canoe; sail go fishing or take a picnic. The hotel Viñuela is easily found by the lake and has a wonderful municipal outdoor swimming pool. It is open to the public end of May to the end of September. There is also a tennis court here for public use.PLACES TO VISIT: TORRE DEL MAR (nearest beach)- half an hour, south. Classic Spanish beach. RINCON DE VICTORIA- Go to Torre Del Mar, and follow coast west. This is a nice drive and will lead to Rincon which is about 20 minutes from Torre. Very nice sea side town with sun beds and restaurants directly on the beach. NERJA- Loads of shops, great restaurants and good beaches. Its about 40 minutes south east. The Balcon de Europa is well known and a great place for people watching and chilling out. Take a dotto train ride around the town or travel by horse drawn carriage. The famous caves are well worth a visit. FRIGLIANA- Near Nerja, really pretty and well worth a visit with lots of individual quaint shops and cobbled streets. Thirty minutes south east of Periana. ALHAMA DE GRANADA- About 40 minutes away north east with great scenery on the drive. There are lots of little shops here filled with curios, knick-Knacks.There is a surprising feature at the bottom of the town, a canyon! Take the main road out of Alhama, heading to Granada, for 1km, and look out for a sign on the left for 'Balnerio'. (hot springs). Follow this road a short way and you will come to the therapeutic hot springs where people bathe, fascinating! GRANADA- Very large, well worth seeing, great drive with wonderful scenery. One and a half-hours away only and well worth it! Lots of glorious architecture here. One of the main attractions is the Alhambra Palace, a citadel, the fortress and home of the Nasrid Sultans, the Alhambra is one of the most widely known of all Islamic works of art- Plus it boasts beautiful gardens. Ensure you book before you visit, more details contact Rona. LOCAL RESTURANTS: THE CANTUESO-This is a great place to eat. Traditional Spanish cuisine and some English dishes that have very elaborate Spanish names. But with the help of the dictionary supplied by the waiters, you can get the gist of the food. Great for lunch or visit in the evening for a wonderful sunset over the mountains while you eat, Fantastic! HOTEL VINUELA-Is ten minutes away from the town by car, cannot miss it (well signposted). The restaurant is worth trying, open all year to non-residents (a smart dress code) . There is also an outdoors-municipal pool that is open to everyone. Open from end of May to the end of September. LOCAL BARS: The best bars in Periana are BAR BARRANCO and THE VERDUGO. Go out the house, down the hill and there on your left is BAR BARRANCO. Very good tapas, cheap. The owner (Antonio) Also runs the village Taxi if you need one. Carry on past the BAR BARRANCO and you will come to the BAR VERDUGO- Friendly. Go in and you will see a partition. You can sit behind it and be away from the bar. It is a proper restaurant and if you go after 2pm they do menu del dia, three courses, for about 6 euros. Its very good. It is also typically tiered, hence the wonderful views. Although the main shopping area is flat, Rona's house is on a fairly short but steep slope, so, may not be suitable less well abled. Children are welcome and you will find that the local population adores them.
